Be a Volunteer

Join us in celebrating Tech Challenge in a convention center hall filled with teams of student inventors presenting their unique and innovative devices.
At the heart of this inspiring and exciting event is an army of volunteers. Groups from local companies and organizations volunteer to
support our next generation of innovators. Get your group involved in supporting Bay Area youth participating in Tech Challenge 2009.
We have over 200 volunteer shifts to fill!
The Tech's staff will:
- Support your group through every step of the way;
- Provide all necessary training as appropriate to each volunteer's position;
- Provide recruiting information and materials, and;
Your group will:
- Appoint a primary contact to work with the Tech Challenge staff;
- Recruit volunteers for the event day April 25, 2009, and;
- Participate in a rewarding and inspiring event where you get to see our future innovators in action!

We are looking for the following volunteer positions:
Judges: Time Requirement: 1-2 days
Commitment: Saturday, April 25, 2009, and we recommend at least one additional weekend day for training.
Specific training and orientation dates are available in the
Key Dates
section of this site.
The Challenge Trial dates are good chances to become familiar with the test rig and to see it operate prior to event day.
Teams of judges will evaluate teams' entries in the Tech Challenge and recommend awards to the head judges who will make the
final decisions. Engineering experience NOT required.

Observe teams as they operate their device for three minutes.
- Review the team's design documentation, examine the device, and talk to team members in order to understand their design process
from brainstorming through to testing and final preparations for the event.
Special Requirement: Adult volunteers only.
Spanish-speakers needed for at least 10-12 positions.
The following volunteer positions require a commitment of 4-6 hours on April 25, 2009
Commitment: Volunteers have the option to work one of the following three shifts:
1. 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
2. 12:00 noon - 6:00 p.m.
3. 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Team Check-In FULL
Be the first to greet our teams on the event day. Help us track who shows up and help the teams head off in the right direction.
Spanish-speakers needed for at least 4 positions
Judging Area Host FULL
You won't get any closer to the action than this. Help our judges run a smooth competition by managing the teams waiting their
turn to operate their device.
Spanish-speakers needed for at least 2 positions
Special Requirement: comfort with basic computer data entry in programs like Excel.
Event Photography FULL
You won't qualify for a Pulitzer, but you will help us create a visual record of the triumphs and failures, excitement and nerves of the
challenge event.
Special Requirement: bring your own digital camera and provide Tech Challenge with copies of all your photos.
Runners FULL
For those of you looking to put miles on your pedometer: collect scorecards from throughout the hall and return them to the head judge.
Help us prepare for the awards ceremony, including sorting and handing out prizes.
Jack or Jill of All Trades
Willing to do whatever.
Information Table FULL
Be at the center of the action. Provide general information to family and friends inside the convention hall.
Break Down Team FULL
Commitment: approximately 2 hours after completion of the competition.
For those of you looking to earn our unending adoration: Stay after the completion of the event and help us clean up and move out of
Parkside Hall.
Special Requirement: unique after hours shift time, (final time TBD).
