Event Day Questions
AwardsQ: If we don't win, do we get a complimentary prize? A: Yes. Every team member at the event gets a team photo, t-shirt, and a participation ribbon. Working on the Challenge is the important thing. Q: Can we try for most spectacular failure, then go again and win a grand prize? A: No. General QuestionsQ: Is it alright if some of the members of the Team cannot make it to the Event? A: Yes. However your documentation should reflect the contributions of all team members. We understand that not everyone can always make it on Event Day, but it's a wonderful experience and we encourage all team members and their families and friends to attend! Q: What is the role of the advisor on the Event Day? A: Know that you will be nervous. All you can do is trust that your team is ready. Let the team do everything unless there is a safety issue. If your team can do everything themselves, it is a sign of a successful advisor. For your part, disappear during the actual trial, and keep the parents out of the way. A good way to do both is to take the parents with you to the stands. The group of you can make a great cheering section to support the team. Q: Is there an oral presentation? A: Yes, or a sales pitch. Think of your time with the judges like a job interview. You will have a conversation with the judges where you are expected to talk about your design process, the challenges you faced, and what you learned. Q: What are the age limits and grade divisions? A: The Tech Challenge is open to students in the 5-12th grades. In 2009, teams will participate and compete in one of three grade divisions: Elementary (5-6th), Middle (7-8th) or High School (9-12th). Your team will participate in the grade division based on the highest grade in your team. For example, if you have 2 team members in 7th grade, 3 in 8th grade and 1 in 9th grade, you will participate in the 9-12th grade division. Q: Where can we stand when we operate our device? A: The team must stand in the launch area. It will be clearly defined. ScoringQ: Do you get more points if you use common household equipment? Is it more innovative to build something from scratch? A: It depends entirely on your design. There are pros and cons to both options. Consider the availability of different materials. The different approaches may require different skill sets. |
