Design Questions
Battery and PowerQ: Can we use a device that can plug into the wall? A: No, it's not safe! Please adhere to the rules and consider safety at all times. Q: Can we use gel batteries like the ones that are used in wheelchairs? A: NO. Gel batteries are a form of lead acid batteries, which are not allowed. Control Systems and AutonomyQ: Can we touch our device once the three minute time begins? A: The team is allowed to touch wires, strings or other items that are used to control the device, but you cannot push it. The device needs to do the work! Q: Can we use a remote control? A: If your device requires some type of external control, you may use any control system you like. Remember that there is likely to be interference if you choose a wireless approach. Materials and SuppliesQ: What kinds of supplies are useful to have around? A: Hot glue guns, safety goggles, nylon ties, PVC pipe and a PVC pipe cutter, superglue - things that are easy to cut, shape, and put together are excellent for prototyping. MiscellaneousQ: Do you have any sites that would be helpful for mechanical instruction, like gears? A: www.howstuffworks.com and the How Things Work book are two great resources. Proposed DesignsQ: Can the solution separate into multiple pieces after time starts? A: Yes, and your solution could start as multiple pieces. Q: Can we use a remote controlled airplane kit for our solution? A: If that helps you complete the challenge, sure, but your own design will be more impressive to the judges. Airplane kits tend to be expensive; you might want to challenge your team to come up with a low-cost solution that relies more on your own ingenuity. If you DO choose to create your solution using a kit, keep in mind it must be small, as there will be up to five satellites and demonstrations going on at any given time on Event Day. AND VERY IMPORTANT if you use a plane kit, you will need to prove that you have made modifications to it to customize it to meet the Challenge, so documentation will be especially important. Q: Can I have more than one solution? A: No. However, your solution may be comprised of more than one device. |
